DID YOU KNOW?

Studies are now linking toxic chemicals in our homes to cancer, asthma, allergies and reproductive issues

Should you be concerned about the amount of chemicals contained in your home?

Absolutely YES!! If you and your family’s health & well-being is important to you then please read on!

IS THIS WHY I’M NOT FEELING 100%?

You may not realise the items or products that you use regularly around your home have the potential to cause you and your family harm. Everything from sun cream, deodorant, perfume, shampoo, washing powder and hand wash can all contain harmful substances.

When I came across this research it really didn’t sit well with me at all. I was quite appalled to learn this has been going on for decades. This was my “a-ha” moment which connected a few dots health-wise for me personally and motivated me to start making changes in my home.

Studies have linked toxic chemicals in our everyday cleaning, laundry, cosmetic and personal care products with ill health conditions such as:

  • hormone disruption
  • fertility issues
  • cancer
  • asthma in kids
  • eczema
  • allergies
  • headaches
  • lethargy
  • dizziness
  • seizures

Have you experienced any of the above conditions?

There is a possibility they could be attributed to the products you are using everyday which, unknowingly to us as consumers contain harmful substances. I have now started to believe that my own personal experiences with many of these listed health issues could be attributed to the long-term and on-going chemical use in our everyday lives.

You may think this is all a bit dramatic and causing scaremongering but I urge you to do some research and then weigh up any risks.

Generally speaking, women are more vulnerable to these health conditions as we tend to have more exposure to chemicals on a daily basis. Think of all your beauty products and beauty regimes you use on your hair, face, mouth, arms, legs and underarms daily and who ‘usually’ does the majority of the cleaning?

HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING IN THE 21st CENTURY?

You might assume (much like I did) that the regulatory bodies in Australia are protecting us and our health. Unfortunately, we have had quite weak and inadequate regulations for decades on the ingredients contained in many of our everyday cleaning and beauty products and tricky manufacturers keep finding loopholes to change formulations to get around banned ingredients!

A further kick in the guts to us consumers is that companies don’t even have to list the ingredients on their products!! It’s up to us to investigate and ask for this information directly from the manufacturers.

The general recommendation is if you are concerned about certain ingredients and there are no ingredients listed then avoid.

DON’T DESPAIR! CHANGE IS AFOOT

Having said all this, Australia’s chemical regulations have undergone some recent reforms (July 2020) to try and encourage businesses to introduce greener and safer industrial chemicals into their products. Here’s hoping this brings some much needed positive regulatory change and gets reflected in better lower tox options on our shelves!!

WHAT CAN I DO?

Research! There are many wonderful apps and free websites that can help guide you with making better low tox choices. I can help with this too!

Feel free to subscribe to my newsletter or follow me on Instagram or Facebook. My goal is to breakdown everything down into easy, digestible, bite-sized pieces as we are all time poor these days and want reliable and useful information on hand which I’m more than happy to give you.

It can feel overwhelming when you first start out as there is so much information. I want to help remove overwhelm and the this-is-too-hard mindset as small step-by-step changes is very achievable.

Next time you reach for your regular washing powder or fabric softener or whatever product you really love, have a look and see if the ingredients are listed on the packaging. If they aren’t it’s usually a red flag to avoid and if they are listed delve a little deeper to expand your knowledge. Just be warned they may no longer be your favourite product!
