It may start as early as your late 30s, but perimenopause typically occurs in your 40s and 50s. It’s a natural process that all women will experience, but it can be tricky to navigate. Keep reading to stay informed of the signs and symptoms of perimenopause, so you can tackle it with confidence!

What is Perimenopause and What Happens During Perimenopause?

I’ve had several conversations with friends lately who are experiencing many of the symptoms mentioned below but were completely unaware that it could be related to perimenopause. This topic doesn’t seem to be discussed enough so let’s start a conversation about #perimenopause to spread awareness and offer help to each other.

Perimenopause marks the beginning of a woman’s transition into menopause. During this time, hormonal imbalances can cause a range of physical and emotional symptoms. These symptoms can vary in severity but it is important to recognise them as they can be indicators of what is going on with the body’s changing hormones.

Perimenopause is a process which starts when the ovaries start to produce less hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone due to the diminishing number of eggs. This is ‘generally’ a gradual process rather than an abrupt change in hormone levels.

Additionally, the start of hormonal imbalances can lead to a number of women’s health issues such as bone loss, depression, anxiety, weight gain (thanks stubborn belly fat!) and an increased risk for certain types of cancer.

By understanding the impact of hormonal changes during perimenopause on women’s health, we can better prepare ourselves to manage these symptoms and minimize the risk of developing any serious health issues.
